March 6-April 4: Ultimate Florida Challenge
This race circumnavigates Florida starting in Fort Desoto in Tampa Bay 1200 miles with a 40-mile portage. The first stage starts at with the Annual Everglades Challenge. At Key Largo you turn north and head for Sebastian Inlet. From there you go to the farthest northeast corner of Florida at Fort Clinch. Then it's about 90 miles upstream on the St. Marys River to St. George. At St. George you begin the infamous 40-mile portage to the Suwannee River at Fargo. After about 220 miles down river you are back in the Gulf of Mexico - next stop Cedar Key. The final sprint from Cedar Key finishes back at Fort Desoto. It's hard to predict which stage will be the toughest since weather will be a factor.
Although the deadlines allow just a bit more than 29 days to complete the Ultimate Florida Challenge, hard chargers might be able to do this in 15 days or so, but the weather would have to cooperate. A more reasonable target is 20 days give. Cruisers may take a more leisurely pace and use every minute of the allowed time. Of course, this challenge is so tough that it is possible that nobody can complete it in the allowed time limits.
March 6-14: WaterTribe Everglades Challenge
Unsupported expedition of 300 nautical miles following the southwest Florida coast from Fort Desoto to Key Largo. Time limit of eight days or less. The WaterTribe Ultra Marathan runs at the same time.
March 6-7: WaterTribe Ultra Marathan A 68-mile course from Fort Desoto to Grande Tours at Boca Grade, two-day limit. For that sprint event, you are not required to carry camping gear. Registration for all three events ends Feb. 15 at noon. For more information www.watertribe.com

Eastern Horizons is the second in a series of films by award winning filmmaker Bryan Smith of Reel Water Productions. From paddling the wildlife rich swamps and mangroves of the Carolinas to the icebergs of Newfoundland; from surfing the "zipper" at Tybee Island, Georgia to playing in the tidal flows around Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy; and from capturing the iconic urban landscapes of New York City to the remote fishing villages of Quebec's Magdalene Islands, Eastern Horizons inspires paddlers and non-paddlers alike to get out and explore the ocean.

Terra Antarctica, Re-Discovering the 7th Continent
Jon Bowermaster
The final expedition in Jon Bowermaster’s ten-year-long OCEANS 8 project took he and his team to the Antarctic Peninsula for five weeks in January 2008. Traveling by sea kayak, sailboat, small plane and foot they had an up-close look at the spectacular beauty of the placelike Alaska piled on top of Alaska piled on top of Alaskaduring days spent paddling. They also were witness to the increasing impact of warming temperatures and a booming tourist business to this pristine and fragile part of the world. Along the way they hooked up with scientists, soldiers and explorers working and living along the frozen coast.
Jon Bowermaster is a writer, filmmaker and six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council. His ongoing OCEANS 8 projectsea kayaking around the world, one continent at a time studying the health of the seas and the lives of the people who depend on themconcluded in January 2008 with an adventurous expedition along the Antarctic Peninsula.
